Monster Pond Hockey 2012

Monster Pond Hockey and Radar Runs held the weekend of February 11 2012 on Lake Nipissing.

Radar Runs

It was a cold weekend on Lake Nipissing. Keeping wam should almost be listed as winter gear (many layers of clothes).. It was -35c most of the weekend and I was out with a few people from my camera club a few hours each day. Frozen fingers become a problem and your battery does not last as long in the cold. Although I was im pressed that the 2 batteries in the grip lasted the weekend at those temps. Winter also means all that white snow fools your sensor so you need to be aware of it and compensate by 1/3- 11/2 stops

This truck went thruough the ice a few weeks back. There have been a few vehicles go through this year. It sucks for the owner but makes for a cool shot.

This is the first real test I have done for video on the 5d2. The first thing I learnt is I really need to get some brand of variable ND filter and I’m open to suggestions. Hoping to get one that is good quality but wont break the bank. I had to shoot most of this at f22 to keep anywhere near 1/60 shutter speed. This is all sooc footage. I didn’t color correct or edit the audio. I did set a custom White balance.

  1. Great shot’s. Nice job on the video too, looks great!
I miss the outdoor hockey and snowmobiling.. reminds me of growing up there.

  2. From a cultural standpoint–we don’t see much of this in So.Cal, thus, this is really different and looks like a lot of cold, fun. LOVED the hockey action shot up top. Everyone is in motion, even in the background.

Video looks good, look forward to some more footage w/out the brightness issues (although you worked around those very well).

Thanks for taking us around your stomping grounds- oh, and that was you dancing around right?

    • Thanks Jerry. I’m looking forward to filming more this season and grabbing a variable ND to deal with any light issues. That was John from the photoclub dancing with Monica and Andrea
